Care Inspectorate rating of "VERY GOOD" in all four areas, November 2018.
The Montessori Nursery School is said to be the best kept secret in Edinburgh! Located close to the city centre, in beautiful, leafy Murrayfield, this hidden gem has been providing outstanding Montessori education for over 27 years. Recommended to others through word of mouth, we offer a warm, engaging and happy learning environment for children aged around three years of age and entry into primary school. Our staff are trained to work with children up to the age of 6.
Children can explore their own interests as well as choose from a range of sensorial, practical life, cultural, language and maths activities beautifully presented in our indoor and free-flow outdoor classrooms. Curious young minds are nurtured, inspired and gently guided by highly qualified, experienced and dedicated staff. With a focus on developing skills at the right pace for each individual child, teachers help to build confidence, focus and resilience that has a lifelong benefit. Trish Thornton, the owner, has worked at the Nursery since 2012 and has managed the school since 2015.
Daily outside free-play is an important part of every day for us and includes regular outings to nearby woodland and riverside areas. Drama, music, cooking and nature activities, as well as opportunities in French and Spanish, are seamlessly woven into the children's daily experiences with us.
The Nursery School is open between 8.45 am and 3.00 pm during term time and offers an early morning drop off facility from 8.15 am and flexible afternoon pick-ups to meet individual needs.
We follow the principles of Maria Montessori - please see our Montessori
page for further information. The school also takes account of the national Curriculum for Excellence in preparing children for their transition to Primary School. We are inspected regularly by the Care Inspectorate ( please see report link below) and are in partnership with the City of Edinburgh Council with eligible children able to access funding.
Our most recent Care Inspectorate inspection report took place on 19 November 2018 with grades of "Very good" in all four areas. It can be viewed here.
